Service to Worker Pattern – Core J2EE Patterns

The service to worker pattern and the dispatcher view pattern component portrays a similar structure. Both of these design patterns, states and explain the combination of the dispatcher and controller along with the helpers and views. Even though they describe a similar structure, they focus on related but distinct usage patterns.

The service to worker portrays the mixture of the view helper and the front controller patterns along with the dispatcher component. Despite, describing the similar structure, the service to the worker and the dispatcher view pattern suggest a division of work among the components and they suggest the tasks to be different. This way, both of the patterns describe a distinct usage which can be put an advantage to the developers, differently in accordance with their names, as they offer the similar services.

What happens in a Service to Worker pattern

In service to worker pattern, the dispatcher and the controller tend to have more responsibilities. Unlike the service to worker pattern, the dispatcher view pattern recommends delaying the time of view processing with the content retrieval. The structure of the service to worker pattern is such that it has several components, each plays a certain role and caters specific responsibilities.

There is a controller, dispatcher, view, helper, value bean and business service. The controller is generally, the contact point for handling a certain request. It is responsible for managing, authenticating and authorizing and delegating to do view management to the dispatcher. A dispatcher manages view and navigates. It is also responsible for managing the choice for the next view to the present. A view is responsible for representing and displaying information to the client. A helper helps the view or controller to complete its processing. The client is looking forward to accessing a particular service, which fulfills the business service role. The value bean object is basically, similar to the helper. It stores the intermediate model state.

Let’s see the following diagram that illustrates the Service to Work pattern.

Service to Work Pattern

Use Service to Worker to centralize control and request handling to retrieve a presentation model before turning control over to the view. The view generates a dynamic response based on the presentation model.
